We are a garden and landscape design, installation, and maintenance company based in Southern Vermont, owned and operated by Joe Hartmann, ISA Certified Arborist NY-5321A.

Utilizing his education in Ornamental Horticulture and Arboriculture,

Joe’s professional career started over twenty years ago training West Coast wildfire fighters, often called smoke jumpers, in emergency techniques to climb out of mature trees, in the event that they landed in a tree when parachuting into a wildfire zone. In addition to this exciting work, Joe also spent years performing tree canopy inspections for the invasive Asian Longhorn Beetle all along the eastern seaboard, from the greater New York City region all the way to Boston and the Massachusetts coastline. Some of his favorite inspection locations were at botanical gardens, where he enjoyed all aspects of the landscape, including ornamental gardens, contemplative walking paths, and beautiful, lush lawns. It was during these inspections, in the peaceful and beautiful setting of a botanical garden, that the idea for Hartmann Tree and Garden was born.

Over the past 20 years, Joe has been applying his expert tree knowledge to projects for his southern Vermont and New Hampshire neighbors, and using his ornamental horticulture education to develop, install, and maintain beautiful gardens throughout this region of New England. His knowledge and expertise runs from the blades of grass in the lawn all the way to the branch tip of a tree. He uses the idea of a botanical garden as inspiration for all of HTG’s design, installation, and maintenance projects.
